What is Answer Engine Optimization?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website so that answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot quote your content directly when they generate answers.

AEO sits next to SEO. SEO targets the blue-link results page in a search engine. AEO targets the synthesized answer at the top of the page or inside an AI assistant. The two overlap in tactics (clean content, real authors, structured data) but differ in formats: AEO rewards direct answers, definition blocks, FAQ patterns, and citeable single sentences.

Why Answer Engine Optimization matters

In 2026 about 47 percent of US informational queries on Google produce an AI Overview. ChatGPT crossed 800 million weekly active users. Perplexity passed 22 million monthly active. When buyers ask a question, they often get a synthesized answer with cited sources before they ever see a blue link. If your brand is not in the citation set, you are not in the consideration set.

How Answer Engine Optimization works

Answer engines lift content that is structured to be quoted. Three signals help. First: answer-shaped headings (a question as the H2, a direct answer in the first sentence of the paragraph below). Second: structured data (FAQPage schema, DefinedTerm schema, BreadcrumbList). Third: credibility signals (real authors with bios, clean outbound citations, recent publication dates). The combination tells the engine that your content is safe to lift verbatim.
